The Most Fashionable First Ladies in History

Frances Cleveland
1886–1889 and 1893–1897

The tall and graceful Frances Folsom Cleveland was just 21 when she wed Grover Cleveland, becoming the first woman to get married in the White House and the youngest First Lady ever. Known as Frank, the nubile First Lady was wildly popular and unafraid to flaunt her youth. Her penchant for wearing low-cut and shoulder-bearing gowns resulted in a petition issued by the Women’s Christian Temperance Union urging her to wear more modest clothing. They might’ve disapproved, but the rest of the country applauded her every sartorial move. She had such an influence over the style of the day that when it was erroneously reported that she’d decided to stop wearing bustles, bustle sales took an immediate drop.
